This is an update originally posted on another blog. This seemed a more appropriate place.
Introduction
I have recently found myself offering advice on managing and storing large photo collections. Following is the system I recommend which is simple and if followed reliable and will protect your precious memories for years to come. The aim is to keep it simple so that anyone can follow, I’ll include links and references to more details for each element. Please leave comments as I mean to keep updating and refining.
Revisions
20/01/2017 – Started rewriting after fatal blog crash. Picasa being phased out.
Time
A big thing to keep in mind is that this will take time and effort though is very rewarding!
Software
Adobe Lightroom or Google Picasa are good options. Though in researching I find that Google has retired Picasa from further development and as such no longer have it for download.
Adobe recently, have been pushing to sell lightroom though it’s Creative Cloud subscriptions along with other packages. While cheap I am a big fan of not having on going costs involved with my hobbies. I have included a link to a standalone version on Amazon that uses my Amazon Associate account so I get a percentage of the sale if you follow the link.

Backups
Make regular backups! Portable hard drives are cheap and can fit many copies of your photos. Even better get two and rotate them. Another affiliate link but it is exactly what I am using and works.
Conclusion
Photo collections are our precious memories and deserve our time and attention. With regular maintenance and a good system it can be a treasure chest that develops with you. I hope you find this helpful and please let us know if you have any questions.
